ARE YOU INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN A STUDY? University of Western Study If you are an adult with Asperger Syndrome or Nonverbal learning disabilty (NLD), you are invited to participate in research investigating word knowledge and visual problem-solving. Participants will be asked about their understanding of word meanings and metaphors. They will also have their brain responses to questions about metaphors recorded. Their responses will be compared to participants who do not have a diagnosis. By examining the electrical signals emitted from the brain when different types of word pairs are presented (e.g., literal, unrelated, or metaphorical), we can see if there are differences in the way that adults in these groups process word meanings. We hope to find skills that will differentiate adults with AS and NLD from each other, and from typical adults, or to rule out differences in the areas that we are investigating. Better distinguishing between features of AS and NLD will in future help earlier diagnosis, and suggest practical, adaptational strategies for adults who face barriers as a result of AS or NLD. The study involves word and visual puzzles, two questionnaires, and the electrical brain activity recording. It will take between 3 and 4 hours to complete, and can be divided into two separate sessions if necessary. It is ideal for adults who live in London, Ontario, or who visit often and have friends or family with whom they can stay. A brief summary of study results will be sent to participants who provide an email address to the researchers for this purpose. The purpose of this study is to investigate the consistency of hand preference and performance abilities as they pertain to motor control, motor planning, and development of children with autism, their siblings and typically developing children ages 3 -12 years old. Sara Scharoun is conducting this project as part of her Master's thesis. Children with confirmed diagnosis of High Functioning Autism (made by a medical professional) are needed. Children will be asked to complete a handedness questionnaire (questions will be read aloud), and complete a series of unimanual tasks, including: lifting a cupboard door, using a toy hammer, placing rings on hooks, tossing a ball to a target, opening a lock with a key, using a screwdriver, pushing small buttons on a gadget, a beading task, grasping an inverted cup to retrieve a toy underneath, and reaching for a cup in order to pour a glass of water from a pitcher. Parents will be asked to complete the same handedness questionnaire for their children, and the Autism Spectrum Quotient: Children's Version. All information and data collected will remain confidential. Approximately 40-60 minutes of your child's time will be required per session. Due to the nature of this study, participants will be asked to complete 4 different sessions on separate days. Participation is voluntary, and participants can withdraw from the study at any time they wish. If interested in participation, please contact Sara Scharoun in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University, at scha6660@mylaurier.ca. This research is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Pam Bryden from the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at Wilfrid Laurier University.
