Considering a move from Ottawa to Waterloo region......

Hello,

I am new to the group. My name is Carrie and I have a 7 year-old son diagnosed with Autism and a 5 year old son diagnosed with Autism. My older son was "too high functioning" to qualify to wait for funding through the Autism Intervention Program of Eastern Ontario (AIPEO) and my younger son did 2.5 years of ABA/IBI privately before we received funding this past July. He is still mostly non-verbal and is considered "moderate" on the CARS scale for Autism. I am wondering what experiences families have had, good or bad, with any programs or services you have received fro your child/ren in your area? Also, I am interested in knowing what type of classroom supports your children have received. We have been fairly lucky in the Catholic board here to have 2-1 help for our youngest in an integrated classroom and 3-4 to 1 help in terms of behavioural support and OT consultation for fine motor issues. We understand that after waiting 2.5 years for funding, that we may r4eceive 1-2 years if we're lucky. Is this a similar scenario there? Who provides ABA and how is it structured? Has anyone ever received funding in one area and then moved and been able to transfer funds? (We waited for the direct funding option (DFO), as opposed to the direct service option (DSO). We also had to wait 7-8 months from the time we declined the DSO to be offered the DFO so we could continue with the success of the program that my son was experiencing. Has anyone had this experience there? I know I have many questions and I don't expect one person to answer, but hopefully I can get some feed-back on some of the questions. It will help us to make an informed decision. I look forward to learning and sharing with you all! Also info on support groups, child care and the like would also be helpful....

Hello Carrie,

Welcome to Waterloo Region! My name is Chuck Myke and I work as a Resource Coordinator for a program called KLASS (Kidsability Lutherwood Autism Support Services.) I manage the DFO / IBI families here in Waterloo and Wellington Regions.  I read your post, and must tell you you have some excellent questions regarding your present situation and your desire to continue with IBI Therapy for your son.  I will do my best to answer some of your questions, but would encourage you to call me for additional information (519-749-8305 #246).

"Who provides ABA and how is it structured?"

In this part of Ontario, ErinoakKids [EOK's] in Mississauga is our Regional Provider/Centre for Autism Intervention Services. Under that "umbrella" we have KidsAbility who provides local Autism services to Waterloo Wellington Regions. You would have to contact EOK's to discuss your situation, initially they would complete the assessment and referral process for those families seeking autism intervention services. As you know, children need to be assessed at a level of moderate to severe autism before they can qualify for IBI Therapy.  If you choose the DFO stream, you may be picked up by KLASS or by EOK's directly. KidsAbility provides the DSO option.

I can't really speak to the issue of "transferring funds" following a move from one Region to the next, but someone at EOK's can provide you with more info about this. It might also be further complicated by the Ministry Office who ultimately provides the transfer of funds. You might want to call EOK's at 1-866-772-7702 and ask to speak to Dr. Ramani (Ext: 4388) about your situation. Was your son recieving 21 hrs of IBI Therapy per week, or was he in the process of transitioning out of IBI? As far as school support, there is the Connections for Students program that asists children who are transitioning out of IBI Therapy and into the school system on a fultime basis. We are very fortunate in this region as we have a number of reputable IBI providers to choose from. You can speak to Valerie and other parents about their experiences.

Please don't hesitate to call me for additional information.

Take care, Chuck
