Introducing Autism to a 2nd Grade classroom

Recently my son's 2nd grade teacher has asked if I would be willing to help the other children in the classroom, understand more about Autism.  I have asked my son of course as that was my first concern, and he seems very excited.  In the past, he has not wanted me to discuss it with the class, so this is a great gain.

My question is some different views on how this should be done.

My thoughts/ideas are: a: simply read a book, maybe "the friendship puzzle", and discuss a little about Carson and how far he has come, or b: discuss how each of us has something different about us, but one thing in common is that we all want to be understood.

Please shoot me some thoughts!

Elaine

Hi Elaine-

Autism Ontario has some resources to help to introduce autism to the classroom click here for a list

they are found at www.togetherforautism.ca

You can see a good speech by Zachary who explains autism to his class. If there is a particular title you need contact chapter president Kevin Mendoza who may have the title on hand.

Maybe the teacher should assign a little project to her class called something like "what makes me special" and they can all share how they are different and have different likes and dislikes. Then ASD is just one way a child is special as we are all created as individuals!

Thanks so much! I love ideas! I'll be checking out your link soon!

I'm pretty sure it's better for me to wait until after the holidays to do this.  Right now they have too much going on with school plays etc.
